The White House is about to change its master, and Sino US relations have come to a new historical juncture. Whether the next stage of Sino US relations can be repaired in benign competition and cooperation will test the game wisdom of the decision-makers of both sides.

In November 25th, when China's president Xi Jinping congratulated Biden on his election as president of the United States, he pointed out clearly that he hoped that the two sides would adhere to the spirit of "no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and cooperation and win-win", focus on cooperation, control differences and promote healthy and stable development of Sino US relations. China has made clear China's position for the next stage of Sino US relations, which shows that China has always held a responsible attitude towards Sino US relations after more than 40 years, and it is also a move in line with the common expectations of the international community.

Needless to say, at present, Sino US relations are facing the most serious crisis since the establishment of diplomatic relations, and frictions occur frequently in various fields. In particular, since the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, the trump government has taken hysterical political operations against China, and Beijing has also had to take counter-measures. At any moment, contradictions are constantly rising.

In the past two weeks, China has repeatedly released goodwill to Sino US relations. On December 7, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China and the United States should strive to restart dialogue, return to the right track and rebuild mutual trust for the next stage of Sino US relations along the direction consistent with the common interests of the two countries and their people. He called on China and the United States to open dialogue at all levels, and any issue can be brought to the table. On December 11, Wang Yi reiterated the above-mentioned views when attending the seminar on "international situation and China's diplomacy in 2020". At the same time, Fu Ying, vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 13th National People's Congress, Le Yucheng, Vice Minister of foreign affairs of China, Cui Tiankai, Chinese ambassador to the United States, and other heavyweight Chinese diplomats also expressed their positive expectations for the next stage of Sino US relations through various public channels.

However, it should be noted that whether the goodwill signals released by China to repair Sino US relations can be effective depends on whether the US side is sincere in repairing Sino US relations. The premise for China to maintain the healthy and stable development of Sino US relations is that the United States should also uphold the spirit of non conflict, non confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, and implement this spirit in concrete diplomatic practice.

No conflict and no confrontation means that some politicians in Washington need to restrain the radical sentiment of ideological prejudice against China and adjust their hostile attitude towards China. The "ping pong diplomacy" of half a century ago was based on the fact that China and the United States transcended ideological differences and Cold War confrontation. With the diplomatic story of "small ball promoting big ball", Sino US relations gradually thawed and finally established diplomatic relations. The close exchanges between China and the United States over the past 40 years have not only benefited the two peoples, but also played an irreplaceable role in the positive improvement of the pattern of international relations. Some radical Anti China politicians in the United States attempt to deny this historical reality, clamour for "decoupling theory", let conflicts and confrontation dominate Sino US relations, especially unreasonable interference in issues involving China's core interests such as Taiwan and Hong Kong, which will only meet with China's resolute opposition and decisive reaction, resulting in intensified confrontation between the two countries and dragging Sino US relations into a swamp.

Mutual respect means that the United States should respect China's right to achieve great national rejuvenation. China has always advocated respecting the people of other countries and choosing a development strategy in line with its own national conditions. However, some American politicians regard China's development as a threat and worry that China's development will damage its leading global influence. In the final analysis, it is the hegemonic thinking. As a matter of fact, China has no intention to replace the United States. In terms of strategic formulation and diplomatic practice, there has never been any assumption or action to dominate the world. Many practical examples can illustrate this point. As one of the permanent members of the United Nations, China's active participation in global governance is due to its responsibility, not to seek sphere of influence and attempt to dominate the world. The Chinese people's right to a better life through hard work should be respected. It is hoped that the new US government will uphold an objective and rational view of China and will not examine China with obstinate prejudice.

Win win cooperation has a realistic foundation for China and the United States. Although the vaccine research and development in many countries has made positive progress, the serious damage caused by the epidemic to the international community is difficult to repair in a short time. Post epidemic recovery is an important part of the anti epidemic work. China took the lead in controlling the epidemic and achieving positive economic growth, boosting confidence in the global economic recovery. As two important powers in the world, China and the United States should put aside their differences at the critical moment, join hands to fight the epidemic, and seek the greatest common divisor in economic and trade exchanges, talent exchanges, global climate change, anti-terrorism and other major fields.

No conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation are the basic principles for building a new big power relationship between China and the United States. It is very important for the two countries to avoid the tragedy of Thucydides trap. Since its introduction by President Xi Jinping in 2013, China has reiterated many times that the United States has expressed its willingness to follow. At a new historical juncture, China has reiterated this principle because for China, the sincerity of the United States is reflected in the restoration of its adherence to this principle.
